An art, media and cultural historian, he has been active in the study of photography and the photographic image especially in the period of its digitisation. He has wide experience of photography education and of academic peer review in the subject. He has taught widely and acted as a consultant in universities throughout Europe and the USA.

In 2008 he was one of the founding editors of ‘photographies’ the internationally peer reviewed journal. He is an editor and author of two seminal books: ‘The Photographic Image in Digital Culture’ (Routledge, first edition 1995, Spanish edition 1997 and a fully revised 2nd edition 2013) and ‘New Media: A Critical Introduction’ (Routledge, first edition 2003 and fully revised 2nd edition 2009), as well as numerous articles and book chapters.

Between 1992 and 1995 he was head of the School of Critical Studies at Newport School of Art and Design where he was part of the team who developed and led the first UK degree programme in Interactive Arts. Between 1997 and 2006, he was head of the School of Cultural Studies at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
